In a week that saw Sony confirm its acquisition of Housemarque and announce an enhanced edition of Ghost of Tsushima, it’s truly impressive that its fans are primarily talking about free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. In the case of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, of course, there isn’t one – it costs $19.99 to upgrade your existing PS4 version and then a further $9.99 to convert it to the next-gen edition.
We’ve already explained how this proves PS5 is for the payers – no longer necessarily for the players – and it seems many agree: the top story on Reddit’s gigantic PS5 community right now concerns this very topic, while a quick glance at developer Sucker Punch’s Twitter replies reveals that fans are feeling pretty frustrated with this latest example of next-gen nickel-and-diming.
Here’s the problem: the expansion sounds excellent and we have no qualms about paying for it. We’ve also got to give the Seattle studio huge credit for adding the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends expansion for free, as well as committing to various other quality of life improvements for everyone. But in an age where the likes of Metro: Exodus are rolling out PS5 ports for free, this tax is unacceptable.
It’s clear that Sony values the content of the Director’s Cut at $19.99, so it’s effectively charging $9.99 extra for improved 3D audio, DualSense controller support, and Japanese lip sync. Presumably there’ll be other technological bells and whistles – the studio has already mentioned faster loading times – but these are largely expected of next-gen upgrades. Sorry, but the precedent has already been set.
This week, Bethesda – a Microsoft-owned published – released a free PS5 upgrade for DOOM Eternal. Heck, we’ve even seen smaller publishers, like Tripwire Interactive for goodness sake, offer meaningful free upgrades to Maneater. Even Sony, back at PS5’s launch last year, allowed fans to upgrade their PS4 copies of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales at no extra cost.
It’s no wonder that an announcement which should have been a slam-dunk has already turned sour. There’s a chance that the bad publicity will prompt Sony to reverse its decision, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if it believes wringing an extra $9.99 out of early adopters is worth the backlash. Either way, it all leaves a bad taste, doesn’t it?

Yeaah...
I'm going to stick with my ancient PS4 until I manage to snag a shiny Series X.
Day by day, I'm losing interest in the PS5 and this whole debacle is so reminiscent of the PS3 era.
These 'Directors Cuts' to me are a direct result of all the big games like GT7, God of War Ragnarok etc, all being delayed until 2022.
Now games that probably intended to have separate DLC purchases to the base game are being locked together as 'Directors Cuts' so Sony can slap a $70 game on store shelves over the holiday period.
To me, I can see the business sense, but that doesn't make it right.
Back to the Doom Eternal mention, imagine if the next gen upgrade had all the DLC locked to it and you had to pay $30 for the upgrade, even though you might not want the DLC but instead the improvements to the base game?
The Japanese lip sync being exclusive to the next-gen version still gets me.
Wow.
It is pretty bad when Microsoft is treating Playstation owners better than Sony is.
The bickering is fueled by websites like this.
@blinx01 I agree, they're basically trying to wring out 70€ from their first party titles that should've been upgraded for free, heck I would even go further and say that they "promissed" they would be updated for free. It kinda annoys me to see this when the competition does the exact oposite and every week we keep seeing more and more games being optimized for the XBSX. If it wasn't for my vast PS4 collection I think I would've bought a Series X instead of a PS5. Already starting to regret that decision.
@Athrum "If it wasn't for my vast PS4 collection I think I would've bought a Series X instead of a PS5. Already starting to regret that decision."
Same, man, same. I actually think about of buying a XSX for third party games (and gamepass) and just use my PS5 for first party titles (once when they are cheap). Sony really has become very arrogant once again and I don't want to support that
I can only remember these free upgrades being offered during this generational transition. In the past I always expected re-releases on new platforms to require a complete re-purchase. It’s the fact that other titles have been offered as free upgrades that the bar was set that it is now expected everywhere.
I always expected this to return and that the freebies were simply a way to entice people to upgrade to a PS5.
Making clickbait headlines is not helping at all. While PushSquare`s criticisms are valid, they are mostly attracting fanboys from the other side who are just adding fuel to the fire.
Children crying over spilt milk. Nothing to see here, moving on.
Yea really only bickering i see is on this site...
The game and dev is awesome, i would pay more just to keep them funded for more great games.
So pretty soon we have to pay a 3rd time for GTAV, but thats ok?
Although I do agree that Sony seem to be a bit greedy at the moment. I can't help but notice push square is basically a xbox promoting channel now days 🤔😂
I’m currently playing the game on PS5 and it already runs beautifully and has the option of 3D audio (which is also really good).
I’ll be interested to see quite what else they manage to eek out of the system to justify the cost but would be more than happy to pay for it. I’m more annoyed that I didn’t know this would be coming when I got the game!
Right now it's a case of who's voice is louder. There's been backlash over the extra cost of this game compared to the PS4 version of the directors cut...but there's been just as loud a backlash towards those speaking out about it. What was the first response when pushsquare questioned Sony's approach to (not even a next gen game but a cross-gen game)having this tax? It was of course that you're in 'Microsofts pocket'. These guys will defend Sony no matter what.
And right now it's doubtful Sony listens and changes its price difference on these cross-gen games.
But as more people get a ps5 and get asked to pay these additional costs to take advantage of the hardware they've just been asked to pay 500 for I can imagine more will be vocal in questioning just why they're being asked to spend 10 more when the exact same game is coming out at the exact same time for less.
Some here seem to have got the arguement confused in their haste to defend anything playstation. Nobody is questioning the value of the game itself. The directors cut being released at full retail price isn't the issue, never was. The questions always been what is Sony saying should cost £10 extra. Right now it's higher resolution faster loading times controller support and better frame rate. All things early ps5 adopters have already been asked to pay 500 for. All things others have offered for no additional costs.
So the question should be asked. And it should be Sony that answers it. Not fanboys. As their original messaging for the £70 price tag of new games was production costs going up. This is however a cross-gen game and coming out on PS4 for £60. So...
They definitely could have made it less messy by just charging the expansion separately and making the PS5 upgrade free. But I still don't see this as an egregious error. The Doom update is just the game. That's it. No extra story or map or anything new.
If they had said let's charge people $30 just to give them PS5 upgrades with no expansion then I'd be a bit more understanding of this being ridiculous but I just don't see how people expected the expansion for free.
Maybe Nintendo just broke me with the Mario 3D World+Bowsers Fury expansion situation. I want to play the expansion but guess what cough up another $60 even though I already own it on Wii U. This situation is not ideal, but there are other publishers doing far more egregious practices than this.
Said it once and I'll say it again: Free PS5 upgrade, paid DLC. It's ridiculous that this isn't the case.
@Divergent95
You didn't even want to buy a PS5.
This website always talks negatively about the PlayStation.
I would gladly pay 10/15 bucks for the Iki island DLC, but charging so much for the PS5 upgrade is a shame. Sony doesn’t show much respect for people who supported the game when it came out and we, gamers, shouldn’t let them get away with this.
@Bleachedsmiles I'm also a Switch owner so I've seen the Nintendo stans defending the corporations and it's annoying. Sad to see it's happening for Sony too. People are so obsessed with the idea that negative feedback is toxic that they don't realize it can happen in the other direction.
The expansion should be paid. The upgrade should not. There we go, that would be so much fairer.
Its also a problem that Ghost of Tsushima already has a patch for backwards compatibility on PS5 that gives it dynamic 4K resolution at 60fps.
But for $10 more you can get dynamic 4K at a maybe more stable 60fps? Plus controller features that The Last of Us Part 2 patched into back compat for free, and the use of activities and the such we keep forgetting about.
Wow there's no good spin here.
I have no idea what the DLC is because the title 'Directors Cut' bores me to death.
I will put it simple. For the dlc alone it's totally worth 20 bucks. For the upgrade, you don't need it. PS5 runs PS4 game at 1800p 60fps. The loading times are pretty much non existent already. You only missing out on haptic feedback and 3D audio, which original game has already in options if you have Sony platinum headset you could have chosen it.
So it narrows down to Japanese lip sync and haptic feedback. 10 euros for that to be upgraded is ridiculous.
But my point was that you don't need it because ps5 already runs it perfectly fine and it looks pretty much the same, unless they actually decide to ramp up the graphics to the max and boost textures with resolution to native 4k and ray tracing enabled.
Besides, haptic feedback is fun for around 2 weeks then it just gets dull. Personally I don't even recognize it anymore.
@ShogunRok It is ridiculous which is why you don't buy it. Either wait for the PS5 version to come out in August or do nothing.
@dasd2 Gurl, I wanted to get a PS5 for exclusives only. Now, everything is getting ported to PC, games have become more expensive, Sony asking money for upgrades etc.
Meanwhile GamePass will give you day one access to every Microsoft exclusive.
@Divergent95 So can you play PlayStation games on Xbox?
Isn't it amazing Microsoft getting all the praise for its future projects? Never in the history of console gaming, a console has launched without any first-party exclusive game in nearly a year after launch. Giving gamepass too much praise in this current state is also ridiculous. PS Now has more or less the same game catalogues (3rd parties) for 3 times lower sub price than gamepass. But people think gamepass is great value because the vast majority of people are currently subscribing through the loop hole.
@dasd2 Umm... Not sure what's your point?
You should never be too "loyal" to any corporation for they are NOT your friends!
Microsoft has stepped up their game and I'm glad. More competition is always good for consumers.
People: pushsquare criticizes playstation! Xbox shills, fact!
Crazy how fanboys think that..
.. almost as crazy as getting access to 100s of games for a low monthly price
@Divergent95 You seem to be loyal to xbox You don't know anything about the PS3
@dasd2 Omg lol! Hun, there is no need to come for me 😂
I've been a fan of Playstation since Gen 1, owning 2, skipping 3, and now PROBABLY migrating to Xbox.
CORRECTION - 'SONY Fans Bicker with Microsoft Fans Over Ghost of Tsushima PS5 Paywall' 99% of people who are moaning about it are just the people who don't even own a PlayStation console.
I totally agree with this article.
I love Ghost of Tsushima and definitely willing to pay for the extension, but this extra 9,99 USD fee for the Ps5 version is a bad sign. Especially in times with game pass and smart delivery by Xbox.
@mariomaster96 @Athrum I have a huge PS4 collection myself, not letting that stop me. I am keeping my PS4 pro, with 166 physical games plus a bunch of digital ones (most from PSN+) but moving to XSX going forward. Eventually I might get a PS5 when I see it on shelves, and buy first party games when I see them on sale, but I’m not paying $70 per game, much less do I plan to be paying upgrade taxes.
My mind was set on this when they refused to offer free upgrades to the base Spider-Man game.
@Divergent95 seems a bit odd to give up the option to play the next load of Sony games that you enjoyed from PS4 gen (an assumption) over the fact Sucker Punch are charging $10 for an upgrade. If you are angry because you like the game then you're inhibiting your option to play the sequel. If you don't like the game then not sure why this would bother you?
@Carl-G I guess I’m a 1 percenter then. By now I might be an “Xbox fan” in your eyes, but I was a PS4 first player all last gen, with a huge PS4 and PS3 game collection.
As a PS5 owner who just bought PS4 Ghost of Tsushima less than 3 weeks ago before this was announced, I’m put off by this whole situation. The game runs fantastic on PS5 already so I’ll just play that version until i’m done with it. I’ll probably get the dlc, but I’m not paying extra on top to upgrade to a PS5 version. I just don’t see the value.
@mrbone Microsoft is getting praised for how it's forward thinking with its hardware. If you have a ps5 you'd be a damn liar if you can't appreciate 'smart delivery', trust me.
Praised for quick resume. If you have Returnal you'd be a damn liar if you can't appreciate 'quick resume'.
Praised for its support for cross-play
Praised for its backwards compatibility that offers completely free updates to hundreds of last gen games. If you have a ps5 you'd a damn liar if you wouldn't appreciate the ability to stick in a PS4 game and just have it run at 60fps.
Microsoft's management has been poor as hell. Xbox one completely mismanaged. Delayed games. Cancelled games. Under performing games.
But you can sense a change. The investments they made years ago are starting to come into fruition. They don't get praise for their games yet. But there's a feeling in the air now that they will do. That this gen will see the tide change again...maybe slowly, maybe quicker than we think...if Sony keep on with this sense of arrogance. Pride comes before a fall. What do you think happened to the Xboxone.
Also, Gamepass is the focus of billions of investment. It's going to grow and grow. Last 12 months we've really seen this. It's going to have games released on it day 1, including 3rd party. PSnow isn't close. I had psnow a year till last week. The offerings aren't close. They could get there but they'd need to make sure the big games they get on it are on for longer than a month or two. That they get more day1 releases. Hell, if Sony announced all Sony first party are coming to psnow day1 they'd crush gamepass...as even fanboys defending £70 games and physical would lap up the chance to play them first for a low monthly sum.

@Carl-G 99%??? Good to see you've done some research to get to that figure. Are you saying that you're happy to pay for the PS5 upgrade when other Sony exclusives have done it for free?
It comes out the week of my birthday so I know I'll be getting it. Plus, I love this game. I don't mind getting it a second time.
Kena is out around that time too though. If you're not happy with the pricing on GoT save your money and get Kena instead.
Okay I got it here is the solution.
Step 1: Remove the Directors Cut label and just call it Ghost of Tsushima: The Island of Ikishima expansion.
Step 2: Make the PS5 update free
Step 3: Charge a flat price of $25 for both PS4 and PS5. Meet right in the middle.
Then there is peace in the State of Playstation!
Sony puts out a game with free DLC & zero microtransactions, puts it on next gen with a £7 fee & people lose it. Maybe Sony should be brave and stunning by charging £59 a game with paid DLC and microtransactions and they would make a lot more too.
Pretty hard to defend unless from a very tribalistic, “I am on Team Sony” type of place.
@FX102A how many PS4 pro patches did Sony charge for?
It’s sad to see so many with zero arguments against the sentiment, some even acknowledge it being valid, still criticize PushSquare for speaking. They just want the all sites to be silenced about anything critical of PlayStation.
It’s among the most extreme forms of toxic fanboyism.
@Bleachedsmiles That doesn’t change the fact I stated there is no new game at the moment for new Xbox. I really want to know which big games on box game pass isn’t available for ps now. WHhat GAMES make you think PS Now is not even close to GamePass? The date availability may differ but ultimately more or less the same. The 3rd party games available on release date are mostly small indie game, not to mention gamepass is 3 times more expensive without promotion. Yeah I currently do have gamepass sub for 3 years (promotion). Haven’t played anything there yet despite being subscribed for last 7 months. I am not into graphic/ performance geek, more into story games. Yeah I might enjoy 60fps games but not deal breaker for me. (Maybe my perception, Spider-Man Miles different modes not very different and I still enjoy equally the original Spider-Man on PS4 or PS5). But really immature of you saying if I don’t agree with you, I become a damn liar. Dude try to be more civil. After all none of us own or invest in Sony or Microsoft!
@StonyKL It's not just Ghost Of Tsushima or the paid upgrade. Like I previously mentioned, Sony is porting everything to PC and there is literally NO REASON for me to buy a PS5. Add the 10 dollars price hike, and I'm "out".
I'll be keeping an eye on Sony but my decision is definitely leaning towards Xbox for this generation.
@Carl-G Odd rationalising over the backlash...if anything Sony charging for upgrades benefits Xbox. I don't think 99% backlashing' against it don't even own a playstation. Would make more sense for Xbox fanboys to encourage Sony to keep on gathering that negative press. But then fanboys aren't the most intelligent.
I think the reality is NOBODY gladly wants to pay for things others are getting for free. Those that pretend they do are either very susceptible and fragile, or they're lying. And it's easy to see why they would lie to others or themselves... they've invested time and money into following a brand. Or...if you've a dedicated channel the last thing you want is to alienate your own fanbase and lose out on money by painting Sony in a negative light...as we see how fans react to such things.
Which is why pushsquare should be more commended for bringing questions up...as it could end up costing them.
@mrbone This is what people keep forgetting. The grass isn't greener on the other side. Sony actually makes more than 3 games a generation. Microsoft relies on 3rd party multiplatform games and indies to carry them. Not falling for it again.
Just need to program your mind to wait for sales even if it takes 6 to 12 months.
Please Sony stop acting like you can get away with highway robbery. The PS4 generation there was basically no competition but now if you keep up with this type of business practice, it's going to push more people away by the day.
I get that there is a precedent for free upgrades, but man oh man, people just always want stuff for free. Sucker Punch worked hard to deliver the upgrade on an already completed game, and so they need to be paid for their work. It’s that simple. If you don’t like it, and you want to send a message to Sony, then just don’t buy it 🤷🏻♂️
@mariomaster96 That's what I did. Series X with GamePass for everything non-PS5 exclusive... It's a slam dunk, while I play games on the X I wait for sale on some games I want to play on PS5 (like demon souls). Shame is the Xbox controller which is garbage next to the dualsense, but 🤷... And let me point one thing, games on MS store are way cheaper than PSN, often 50% but can go lower as 80% lower on Xbox than PSN for the same title. The Terminator cost me around 5USD for the last gen version on Xbox while for PS4 I was asked $39.99... so tell me if you can't recoup the price of a Series X? I think Tony hawk's remake was also half the price for next gen versions, Metro bundle (all metro games) cheaper than 50% ... And so on. How's that possible? Ok, Microsoft has deeper pockets or maybe it's because having also PC audience let them decrease the price (likewise steam is way cheaper than MS). You can't go wrong with a Series X. And then you don't worry about exclusives anymore, you're covered both sides.
@mrbone there's really too many to list. I'm currently playing the new Dirt on gamepass if that helps. You have both...you can see for yourself how many different games are on each.
But like I said, Xbox hasn't been praised for their first party games yet. They've been praised for the potential of them, the promise of them, but not the actual games yet. That will start to change within the next 6 months. Flight sim in the next coming weeks is already heavily praised. Forza horizon always reviews well. Halo will no doubt get people playing. And then next year follows a solid list of games with a monthly release schedule which Xbox aims to continue going forward. Right now there doesn't look like Xbox is going to have another games drought for a long while.
And then consider that gamepass also includes EA access and cloud gaming - allowing Xbox to focus on taking full advantage of new hardware whilst still giving access to the games to Xbox one only owners.
To be honest, i have zero interest in returning to this game. Beautiful to look at but repetitive as hell. Story is fine but the entire game boils down to raiding a camp - which is identical to every other camp - to get a bit more of the (very good) story. You may occasionally have to follow some footprints to get to said camp. But that is literally it. Even the duels have the exact same cut scene to start them off. Side quests follow the same format.
I was mugged!
Oh no who by?
Some chap in that camp over there.
Sorted.
Everything else is purely optional to raise stats. Chop bamboo, write a haiku, take a bath and all are found by following a bird.
Except shrines. Because the bird is replaced by a fox and you follow that instead.
Im glad i played it but, unfortunately, it became a chore towards the end for me.
@Bleachedsmiles sorry not convinced. I have generally compared the list. The games I am interested in are either available on both or not available on both. I really would like you to list more out of your too many to list rather than just 1. I really do!! Yeah, Street of Rage 4 was cool but that now available on PS now too. I don't like racing but Dirt was given free as part of PS Plus, still haven't touched that. The thing is ''nowhere near close'' is just the opinion of an Xbox fan, you. In reality, it is not much different (excluding the upcoming 1st party games).
You have to pay for Gamepass, they are not giving you anything for free. You pay a monthly fee even if you never play any games. And if you really look into it, most games on gamepass are also on PS Plus and PS Now. I am no fan boy, I have the PS5 with Plus and Now and Gamepass on my computer.
@Divergent95 I enjoyed this exchange. The sudden "well you're clearly an xbox Fanboy" had me rolling.
@MattSilverado It is just a different time of promotion. Terminator has been discounted multiple times on PSN before.
Only bicker I see is from this site. I don’t mind supporting a great dev that delivered us an amazing new IP. Nobody’s complaining how many times you gotta buy GTA V each generation right? that game came out 8yrs ago! C’mon
@Richnj Me too lmao! For a second I thought he was trolling 😂
Amazing, the level of entitlement on both sides. Either you're a Sony fanboy for defending this or an XBot if you slam it.
The devs have a proven track record on an amazing game, and so I'll give them what they've requested for the PS5 Directors Cut upgrade. Ghost of Tsushima is just THAT GOOD a game, and I'm quite happy to throw a few extra bucks at them for the PS5 native experience. I've spent more for less quality/content before, at least I know these guys will deliver.
For anyone intensely butthurt about this...skip going out to eat once or twice, and you're golden as far as money. Or just ...don't upgrade. Or just do the PS4 upgrade. No one has a gun to your head REQUIRING you to take part.
Sanity, folks. Its just a game, and a non-life-required purchase.
Even with my personal opinion being that I don't mind the $10 upgrade fee in this particular case, I'm starting to get the creeping feeling that Sony is becoming more and more like Nintendo than anything else. It stubbornly leverages its legacy as selling points rather than pro-consumer, logical business and PR decisions. They haven't gone as far as Nintendo has (locking game features behind a toy, for instance), but I notice them slowly getting there with each passing month.
@mrbone But I think it was regular price on MS store. Of course discounts cannot or shouldn't be compared, but regular prices are just way different. In any case there's no hurt in choosing the platform with better prices.
@WolfKingk87 Exactly. I'm not saying what Sony is doing is right or wrong. It's up to the individual to judge it, but it's yet another article on here about it. It was already discussed during the last article when they reported about the pricing and such.
I'm beginning to agree with others that they care more about causing fanboy arguments than PlayStation at this point. Again, not saying the negative stuff doesn't need to be reported. The fact that this is the second topic lately that has been given multiple articles when it was already discussed once makes it hard to think otherwise.
@MattSilverado the regular prices are more or less the same as the developer sets the price.
The kids who stamp their feet and constantly talk about moving to xbox in every thread are hilarious to me. Just do it already, what are you waiting for? Go and get yourself a brand new shiny $500 dollar box and find something new to complain about. I'll even give you a hint at something you can start with, not a single first party game released in the first 12 months of trading. Have fun 😂
@KilloWertz i agree with you , it should be up to the user if they want it or not , if some one doesn't like it or want it that's fine. i don't see why another article pretty much saying the same thing needed to be made. i thought this was going to be a stand alone , so i thought it was going to be 40$ , so 30$ for all of that seems like a better deal to me. is it perfect? no , but its way better then what they offered with miles and the ps5 version of spiderman.
@Intr1n5ic i think they'll find anything to complain about , and no matter what happens they'll just never be happy
What happened to the last article that had this topic discussion?
Seems pretty simple to me:
If you hate the model, then don't buy it.
If you hate $70 games, then don't buy them.
Use some self control and wait until a sale or get it used if you can.
I think because of the scalpers Sony has a serious cash flow problem. And trying to find where ever they can somenextra money. That’s why all their future projects looks like they’re all crossgen. But to suck dry you’re fanbase is not a solution. With a playerbase of 120mil if they make PSNow largely available in other countries they could really have a gamepass contender even better. But time will tell after Ps5 will be available in stores will see if Sony’s software revenue will increase or not and then we will se a shift in prices.
@SilkySmile89 How exactly do scalpers hurt Sony's cash flow?
@dskatter
"For anyone intensely butthurt about this...skip going out to eat once or twice, and you're golden"
Almost as comical as when the PS3 launched with the crazy high price and they told us to go work 2 jobs to pay for it!
Come on man. Take your blinkers off.
Yes, they aren't forcing us to buy this, but they are taking advantage big time and there's no defending that.
I used to love coming to this site reading all the news about PlayStation. But lately the only thing we read is complaining, lack of game pass just for the clicks and awakening heated discussions. Like others have said this is the third,if not more, about the pricing. Yes Sony could have done it better. But at the same time other companies do the same. I mean how many times did we pay a ridiculous price for the same, and not even improved, Mario's and Zelda's. Please go back to greatness this site was and stop with these endless complaining articles.
This whole thing is just annoying at this point. You can buy the game for $60 at launch, enjoy it, and pay $20-$30 for the dlc/upgrade. OR you can wait a year to buy the complete edition with everything included for a discounted price. THIS IS LITERALLY NOTHING NEW. I don’t get why everyone is b****ing and moaning about it.
The $10 is essentially for a soft remastered version. Mass Effect just re-released for $60 and nobody complained about that when you can buy all 3 for a grand total of $8.
@twitchtvpat Exactly. I'm beginning to wonder how much longer I'll be coming here. The constant prominent positioning/pushing of everything negative is getting really old. It'd be a shame too as it was once a quality place to come for discussions and such, and it's not like there's very many good places to visit for gaming discussions that are actually very active.
I had a PS5 and sold it, but got another one just a week ago. I'm finally playing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and absolutely loving it. It brought me back to the PS3 days, which is a lot more important to me than multiple articles crying about what Sony decided to do with a Director's Cut release of a game.
Again, not saying everything has to be positive, but when did all of this BS become more important than loving and actually playing great games? It's not like those have suddenly vanished.

@Martijn87
I'm not sure what happened to this site, but it wasn't always like this for sure.
Should have just charged $70 for director's cut on both consoles and charged $30 for the upgrade. There would probably be a different argument being had but definitely not as bad as it is now.
@ViolentEntity If you dont have the system whats the complaint you get a expansion for €20 that still works on a PS5.
@Voltan No software sales that how.
@Enigk Then you can put in the upgrade to nextgen i think you are right on this one.
Removed - inappropriate
@PeakyBlinder I don't know about that entirely. I'm a huge fan of Sony and their first-party titles and I still think that this $30 price tag is pretty darn steep. Ghost of Tsushima is easily one of the greatest games I have ever played in my life and the first game I got a platinum in, but I'm still pretty apprehensive about handing over $30 for this.
@Royalblues I had no issues at all with any firstparty titles at full price.

@LightningLeader What news repackaging the same article with a new header.
@Flaming_Kaiser I see how you might think that but it's not like these consoles become locked away somewhere for months or something. They make their way to gamers just like the non-scalped once - in some cases slightly slower, probably - but on the other hand they have a higher chance of going to someone with more expendable income (who are willing to pay the inflated price).
Scalpers are a serious problem but I don't think they're a big problem for Sony's cash flow.
Free upgrade, paid DLC is the proper way to handle this. Sony is encouraging Xbox sales and needs to reverse course.
@Voltan Or someone has to put money in the inflated prices and does not have extra money to spend on games. And how many of these console stay on Ebay for ages when im certain they would have sold to a lot of happy customers with extra cash to spend on games.
@Royalblues Still Nintendo games are high quality i gladly pay extra and have to go to Ubisoft to get my game fix with broken releases and full of monetization.
@ViolentEntity They keep releasing high quality games i could not care less for any smooth talkers in the end they are all the same. 🤪
I'm signing out and taking a break from PushSquare. Removing my browser bookmark too. You may not care about one person when your clickbait articles attract 100s of comments, but I find the state of this site to be really sad nowadays. Your articles no longer accurately reflect the mood of players in general. You strive to stir up and "enliven" debates that don't exist beyond an extreme circle of fanboys. I'm really disappointed, Sammy. I'll find a different site that actually gives PlayStation news rather than exaggerated Soapbox articles that stoke console war philosophies and discontent. I do love many members of the community here, but the content providers have sullied a good thing and I would rather be in a place that lifts up the conversation than play in the dirt.
@get2sammyb I know petitions usually doesn't bring much change but I'm hoping if it gets enough attention, Sony might change its course. Hoping your platform can further spread the awareness.

@Divergent95 I was fortunate enough to get both day 1. As much as that sounds good in theory I know myself I couldn’t go without playing the ghosts last of us horizon Sony has to many good exclusives to ever not own a ps5 imo.
In my opinion there are currently more reasons to own a ps5 than a Xbox series. Yes Sony's PR is rather strange these days but at the end of the day, Game Pass to me is currently a poor man's selection of games compared to PlayStation's lineup. Naturally things may change but unless you are focused on previous gen via game pass and superior backwards compatibility PS5 is currently the proven next gen platform. Well, I still prefer my PC though.
The likes of Demons Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Miles Morales is simply more attractive to me than Game Pass (which I have) unless the main factor is cost and despite the backwards compatibility and upgrade tax issues on PS5, there are still so many quality previous gen games that you won't get anywhere else. Could change for all competitors involved though.
i never thought sony would be on board with free upgrades theyve always wanted people to double dip and directors cuts is there latest way of doing this
problem is it might cause people to think twice about buying their games at launch as i for one wont be buying a new Sony game on release again I will wait and get the proper finished complete directors cut the following year
I have both consoles and like them both for different reasons but people calling GamePass “a poor man’s line up” are on drugs. Games like Sony’s own The Show 21, Outriders, Yukaza Like a Dragon and Octopath Traveler are just a few on it currently. The Ascent and Flight Simulator are coming this month. 12 Minutes, Psychonauts 2 and Hades next month day one.
Anyway, don’t even know why GamePass is part of this conversation. It has nothing to do with the upgrade fee.
Maybe Sony deserves the criticism? Maybe backlash is show to have an effect and they want PS to be at its best.
While I believe Sony needs pushback for stuff like this, it's sad to see so many people talking about going with MS. I'd much rather have Sony be dumb with their re-releases than support a company that purposely buys out giant 3rd party publishers to keep games off other platforms. Not to mention how they're basically tanking their profits just so they can slowly try and monopolize gaming and have everything go through them. The day MS becomes the leader in gaming is when it dies for good.
@mrbone You haven't touched the latest Dirt game because you're mistaken - it's never been offered on plus.
Just cause the games you're invested in are on/not on both doesn't mean psnow offers more games.
It's not just first party differences. It's also 3rd party games being released day 1. EA subscription included. Cloud gaming. Xbox series X upgraded games.
PSNow doesn't even allow the actual FREE ps5 updates of the games on there. Borderlands 3 for example...you're locked out of the ps5 upgrade. Just as you are if you have the psplus versions of Control, final fantasy 7 ect.
You also get discounts with gamepass on games that are on the service. On Now there are no discounts.
I'm not trying to convince you. This isn't me being an Xbox fan. This is just how it currently is.
Easy debate to resolve. Vote with your wallet. Either buy paying for it or keeping your wallet in your pocket.
If these non factual soapbox articles continue i will also be leaving this site in search of a decent discussion. Please stop this, PushSquare and focus on better journalism like your most recent indies article.
Boo woo, stop crying. Leave the crying on Twitter for those who spend majority of their day being woke there while not playing games at all. If you like the game enough, it's your money and as for I, I'll gladly pay up because it's a great game and it'll look even better on the PS5 and I'm not a cry baby peasant.
This is like complaining about microtransactions. It's a business, businesses do this type of BS. If you want to be entertained and have the money, good for you but to hear people cry about this stuff cries I'm a poor peasant. Move on with your lives and cut the shiet already. Put on your big boy pants please, thank you.
As for those who are switching to XB, go for it ....... you'll be back with Sony eventually LMAO!!!!!!!!!
@SegaSaturnSNK bet you can't wait for the pc release. Will look ever better! Eh?
@Bluetrain7 I hear you. I think of doing the same thing. A shame really this used to be the best site for Playstation news and constructive articles. Now it's just a ghost of itself. Hope it turns around
@mrtennis1990 Are you really that mentally weak? In all seriousness I think you're doing the correct thing for your mental health. And I wish you a speedy recovery.

Pay the money or don't pay the money, don't understand all the moaning? Don't know why gaming industry is the only one that should work for free after release though? Did not get a free bluray version of any of my HD movies and never expected it.
Had my original comment removed so let me phase it another way. Does this article bring anything new to the topic from the previous 3 others already on this site. I don't think it does, just seems like an excuse to keep the conversation going.
@CrushALL yeah...Xbox tried to double to price of gold to get people on gamepass. Was a terrible move. You know what the Xbox fanboy channels did? What the dedicated sites did? Spoke up. And Xbox didn't raise the price.
You guys hear a little negativity towards Sony and you cry you're leaving this site for good. That everything is in Microsofts pocket. Not even a hint of embarrassment about it. It's crazy. Disagreeing with an opinion is one thing but behaving like you've mental problems is something else.
@Bleachedsmiles YES SIR OR ...... MA'AM!!!!!!
Where was this article during PS5 launch where games like Concept Destruction were cross-buy in NA/EU but Asian countries got shafted by having to pay full price for the PS5 version?
The best way to show Sony you’re not happy with the pricing is to just wait till it goes on sale. There’s going to be plenty of games to play in the mean time. So much has been pushed back and so much is going to release on top of each other in the coming months. Next year is going to be a nightmare of releases, it’s going to be awesome.
@Voltan if those units are in the hands of scalper no body is buying the games. Sony for the moment is losing money on each PS5 sold, their not making profits from hardware.
I think the problem is that most ps5 upgrades have been free, and charging for it now seems greedy. This game has held value more than any other exclusive so will be making enough money to cover the development costs. I love the game and will happily pay for the expansion but still have not been given a reason to buy a ps5. Sony will be blind to this until console sales suffer which doesn't look to be happening anytime soon. And the whole my massive greedy company is better than your massive greedy company argument is ridiculous. We're the only losers here.
@Bleachedsmiles It's not the negativity. There's nothing wrong with articles pointing out negative things when they need to be pointed out. It's another to post yet another negative article that brings literally nothing new than the previous ones about this topic. There was no need for this article when the topic was already discussed to death with the previous ones. That's what's turning people like me off.
@blinx01 Translation: "I don't want to spend more money to support developers who made a great game even better."
That's your purview, of course. So...don't play it. Again, no one has a gun to your head.
Also, I'll be very interested to see if you rebuy GTAV for PS5 and complain about that as well.
@Royalblues There's a difference between negative articles being needed and posting the same thing multiple times. This adds nothing to the discussion that the previous article did, other than the added element of complaining about this website being a shell of what it used to be.
There was already a Reaction article about this. People already posted dozens of comments about it. It's been discussed. Why bring it up again? It makes no positive sense.
@KilloWertz I can see how that could depress you. So take a step away if it helps you. But you know what else will benefit you? If Sony actually start listening to the negative feedback. If that means it has to be repeated till Sony finally hears then so be it. Right now they don't care about some article questioning a £10 pricing difference...or cross-play or treatment of indie Devs, or whatever it may be. There's always just as loud voices defending them...and plenty willing to just accept things. But I tell you one thing for sure negative press will do...it will start growing the Xbox install base again...even if people are picking it up as a secondary console. And the majority of that Xbox install base will adopt gamepass...and you continue to see their subscription base grow...and that's when Sony will eventually take notice. So everything is playing it's part. And then we all win because competition as always benefitted us as the gamers.
@Bamila I just turn of the feedback loved it at the start was so fun to play with, but like you said he does get dull after a few weeks. So really paying 9.99 for Japanese lip sync which I would never use.
I for sure will buy the dlc no issues there cant wait for it. But the upgrade naw I quicker pull out my ps4 just play the game on that.
@notbrianblessed
100% correct People demanding FREE for something that involves real man hours to make. No one says the content is not worth the price and they refuse to purchase it. Anyone that think the value is not there can not buy it and have zero cost to themselves.
Then we have the people using this to promote XBox on a PlayStation site for Microsoft? I have a PC that's more powerful then my PS5. I can buy Game Pass for any given month for just $9.99. Yet there has been NO one title on XBox Series X that has compelled me to do so! They never list games that seem to make it so great. Adding that PlayStation give us no down free time to do so. I still have a big back log I cant catch up on PS4.
The only way Sony and they can be stubborn just look at them in the tv market.
Will stop charging £70 for game and all this over stuff, is if the general public stop buying PS5, which would also mean less games and controllers and PS Plus.
Although that may not work as they are so stubborn in the tv market it has driven down to third place and a long way behind Samsung and LG.
They lost my tv upgrade this year 2021 TVs to LG C1. They can have what seems to be an arrogant way about them Sony.
Why is this a surprise? they've already done it with the remaster of Spiderman on PS5.
I feel they should provide the update to a ps5 version for free, like a lot of other developers have done. But I know I’ll buy it and the directors cut the day it comes out anyway.
$30 for existing owners is a bit ridiculous when you consider what else you can get for that money.
This really sucks, from a customer standpoint, they really do have alot to improve on. First their backwards compatibility as well as their next gen upgrades. If they embraced bc all the way back to ps1 with trophies added and these upgrades then they would have a massive catalog which would incentivize the customer. I'll probably still buy the upgrade but I might wait.
They could have just hide the charge for improvements in the expansion, charge $30 "for it" and let PS5 owners with just the base game have the improved version minus the expansion for free. Then when players buy the expansion, Sony would get their money anyway. Yea some would say the expansion isn't worth $30 but that's just more of a personal opinion. The bad optics could have been avoided, lol.
Sony is getting cocky and dumb again.
@WolfKingk87 The bickering is fueled by Sony's greed and their actions. speaking up against those greedy blood sucking madafakez is never wrong and is a necessity in fact. you should never allow those corpos to take advantage of you. they locked features that your ps5 supports in a dlc and asked you to pay for them
Is the directors cut a lot of extra content? If so then it's basically an expansion, I see no issue with that.
People would've been fuming even more if they'd been asked to buy a whole game again, instead of an expansion being offered.
The ps4 to ps5, yeah maybe should've offered that for free given the circumstances.
And yes this site has taken on a strange amount of negativity about playstation lately, which is odd, given the name of the site.
@dasd2 because of what they're doing, because they're greedy
All I'll say is that I don't agree with being charged extra to fully utilise the hardware I've already paid for, no issue with paying for expansions but I draw the line at paying for rumble and visual settings
There is a lot of people on both sides of this argument. But no matter how you look at it, it's going to drive people to other platforms.
@AllenSnyder I'm not sure what happened to Sony, they haven't been this greedy before
@Intr1n5ic "not a single first party released in the last 12 months"
Gears Tactics 84 meta
ori and the whisp 93 ,eta
flight simulator 91 meta
@Yaycandy I kind of agree with you about GTAV, but at the same time I find it hard to believe that anyone actually needs this for a 3rd time; I know I don't speak for everyone, but as much as I enjoyed it, I got for the 360 and the PS4, I'm more than happy to wait for GTA6
Honestly I think the real problem is people acting like they're owed something to begin with.
Just like anybody else, I'm happy when an upgrade is offered for free, but I feel like that's something we should all be grateful for, rather than acting like we're entitled to it. Those moaning about having to pay extra are acting like they're being forced to buy insert game name here and seem to forget that these updated versions weren't actually free to produce
I know this comments gonna get flak, but someone had to say it.
@BRUTALSAM I like how you responded and deliberately misquoted me 😂
I said "Not a single first party game released in the first 12 months of trading" meaning, in the first year of the Series S/X launch, what new games have any of their studios released?
Gears Tactics came out April 2020
Ori and the Will of the Wisps came out March 2020
Microsoft Flight Simulator came out August 2020
Even using your wording of the last 12 months only one of those came out 😂
Try again.
I'm not really sure what to think but several of the comments that infer the new expansion should be paid for but the ps5 upgrade should be free is where I am leaning.
The game looks gorgeous enough anyway I may wait to see just how much more impressive the update is. As for the extra island I may buy it at some point but I thought the game was big enough and in parts repetitive enough as it was, I certainly don't need extra armour pieces or Haikus so this will be one I wait for the user reviews on.
This "bickering" is entirely pro consumer. People that are trying to silence those frustrated are effectively telling you to shut up and fork over more money. We don't have to put up with that...you want to push out a year old game at full price? Ok...but the next gen upgrade should at least be free.
Yes I unfollowed PushGP from twitter because its just all cheap drama right now.
'Sony fans bicker'
Who are you kidding?
Even "Sony fans' is a bone thrown.
Who the heck is a "Sony fan'?
Articles are getting more ridiculous every day
@ReddJelly
Every night before I go to bed I say a prayer to Sony and hope that they still want to take my money. I worry that someday they'll go "NO. We're not going to sell you this because you're ungrateful! Keep your money!"
@ATaco you can be as facetious as you like bud, but the point still stands. Do you get a free Blu-ray upgrade for a DVD you already own?
@ReddJelly apples to oranges. Why compare different entertainment mediums?
@ATaco It's the principal/idea at the core that matters. If you can't understand that there's really no point in continuing the discussion
@ReddJelly I'm just curious here why some games get free upgrades and some don't. Like the article mentions, Doom Wreckfest and SpiderMan all offered free upgrades if you already bought the game. I'm not arguing that they shouldn't charge for the bonus content...but they're charging for the PS5 upgrade this time too. I just want to know why this game is suddenly the exception to the standard that they were apparently setting until now. Will Horizon 2 also have a $9.99 upgrade fee too?
@ATaco I'm well aware of the point you're trying to make, but like it or not I don't agree with you, just like you're perfectly at liberty to disagree with me.
However my point was that as awesome as it is to get a free PS5 upgrade for any game, it shows a pretty high level of entitlement when you just expect it. It wasn't free for the Dev team to upgrade, so really there's no reason to think any upgrade would be automatically free.
Sony could have asked $30.00 for the PS4 as well and I bet nobody would have had an issue, except maybe that for some it may feel a bit too steep (but we don’t know how big that DLC is).
Imagine you would have to pay extra on PC just because you got a stronger GPU that can also do more AI, and you also got a different controller similar to DualSense.
This is very bad practice. Either offer both versions for $20.00 or $30.00, but don’t make PS5 customers pay more.
Totally agree with this article, I've been really enjoying PlayStation since PS1, just skipped PS3 but what Sony is doing lately is totally unacceptable. Just too greedy and arrogant as hell!!.. PushSquare keep saying the truth, despite the people not seem to like to hear it.
@ReddJelly yes we're free to disagree with each other and I'm free to believe that people who are willing to mindlessly throw their money down the drain don't care about the power of a consumer and are just mindless drones conditioned to buy buy buy and never question regardless of what the price is.
But yes, we're free to disagree.
Removed - inappropriate
@ATaco I never bought Ghosts on PS4, nor am I definitely gonna buy it for PS5. The fact I actually understand how businesses (and the world in general, really) works doesn't make me a mindless drone, I'm just not an ignorant child.
You can willfully ignore the point I'm making if you wish, but all that does is show your own obtuseness and facetiousness.
And your aggressiveness doesn't do anything to help your point, just kinda makes you look like a dick
Gamer entitlement strikes again. Pathetic
I just stick with ps4 version it looks boss anyway noway I'm paying to upgrade this or Gta v ps4 versions will be fine!!!!
Robbing B*****ds.
Sony, Ms and Nintendo don't care about a single person on any of these sites. All they care about is how much money they can get out of you.
Having a favourite is one thing, but to refuse to have a conversation or hear out other peoples concerns on something like this is shameful behaviour and bordering on psychotic!
No way can i call myself a pony when so many are acting like this. A lot of you need to have a word with yourselves!
Good job @pushsquare for not acting blindly.
@ReddJelly first off your initial post was rather insulting, so I responded in kind. I'll ask you one more time though to see if you can actually give me an answer besides "I know how the industry works".
You mentioned that it costed the ghost of Tsushima devs to upgrade to the PS5 port. So why is it that Doom eternal, which is now owned by Microsoft, went out of their way to release a free PS5 upgrade? Why is it that smaller studios like the ones that released Manhunt (who could certainly use the money) went out of their way to release a free PS5 upgrade?
I just never understand why people get so upset when these sorts of situations get called out. If people had remained silent about the playstation store fiasco, then the PS3 and Vita stores would be shut down by now. Why call gamers childish when they're fighting to give consumers like YOU better deals and make sure you aren't being taken advantage of?
You're probably going to give me another veiled insult like calling me ignorant or a child again (and then whine when you get the same sort of response) so I'll leave it at that. I will say though that in the future if you word a comment in an insulting way, don't be surprised when you get the same level of snark sent back to you. It's entirely possible to respectfully disagree without calling the other side childish or ignorant.
@ATaco I fail to see what part of my initial comment could be construed as insulting, so please quote what you found offensive.
Of course it cost the Devs to do the upgrade, I know you're aware of this, more work put in equals more man hours spent on the project. They still need to be paid for their work.
I mean it's not like you do all your work for free, right?
Also, the only game called Manhunt I can find any info on is the PS2 game (made by Rockstar, not a small company) which has no PS5 port, so not sure what you're talking about with that.
As I keep saying, when dev teams DO decide to do an upgrade for free, it's awesome, but this SHOULD NOT just be expected, even if a load of other games have had one.
That was my initial point about gratitude; obviously I don't think we should all be grovelling in the dirt, but rather be happy when we do get a free upgrade, and to stop throwing toys out the pram when it hasn't gone the way you want.
I'm not upset about anything bud; I don't know you and you're words don't have any particular effect on my mood.
However, if you don't think calling someone a mindless drone (which came before me calling you a child or ignorant, practice what you preach) is insulting, or is somehow a 'respectful' way to have a discussion, here's your wake up call.
Removed - flaming/arguing
$10 for those things listed plus dynamic 4K at 60fps sounds good to me! It takes work to make those things happen and $10 isn't very much. Don't see why people are upset and why Push Square is leading the charge. Just seems like whining. If you don't think it's worth it then don't buy it.
Sony Sony - there are tons of positive things you could learn from Nintendo. How to milk your loyal customers dry is not one of them. Make the upgrade free and only charge 20 for the DLC. Until then - NO BUY FROM ME
Everybody here is mad about $10-20 upgrade like you don’t spend that on fast food or some crap like that. You spent $500 on a next gen console but a little $10 got you people acting buckwild
@mucc Truth of the matter is that Microsoft has done a great deal of good to the gaming industry to the point that all gamers from PC,Sony,Nintendo should thank them for charting a new path.
Subscriptions make gaming affordable and stress-free and risk-free. We have them for movies, music, books, fitness courses, heck even shaving blades from Gillette. It is only logical to have them for gaming as well. Forcing the industry into offering a content-rich and affordable subscription system (instead of 80 bloody euros for a game) is the right path for both the gamers and the console makers/publishers. Everyone better come to terms with the new reality and thank Microsoft for having the guts to introduce this.
Second. Microsoft has done a lot of good contributions to gaming. Creation of one of the best shooter franchises of all time (halo), the best racing franchise in the market (Forza) and the first proper online gaming infrastructure in Xbox Live. Trying to act like Xbox is some cancer destroying the industry while Sony is magical healing potion for the industry is a very narrow-minded view.
Wasn't this already discussed in at least one article already? Why are push square so keen to keep on stirring up discord? And why is it when i choose to ignore somebodys comments i can still see them? I love this site when its on form and is actually positive in what it reports on but when its churning out this kind of nonsense just for the sake of it or to fill space it just gets disheartning fast..
@dasd2
That’s not true, you’re speaking in hyperbole.
Would you rather untrue but sycophantic journalism?
@Tharsman
Maybe because pushsqure made two reports before this one that had many problems? The Change.org petition report was completely wrong (it was made by an Xbox fanboy) and guess what? the post is still there and they never updated it after two days!! The indie stuff report was true but some indie devs on twitter had the complete opposite opinion about the situation but pushsqure never mentioned them and only talked about the devs that were mad at Sony...Yeah, Sony charging for the PS5 upgrade is not justified at all, but don't put the blame only on fanboys when pushsqure has done many wrong stuff too.
@ReddJelly i think he meant that shark game not the murder 'em up by rockstar which i'd pay £30 for a ps5 remake...REMAKE not port...
I prefer the upgrade (not the dlc) to be free but $10 is not that much, and I already played the game about 75 hours so I don’t have problem with $10 upgrade.
Imagine being mad because you love the game so much that you want the directors cut without the extra content.
@Retro1994 *****. Microsoft has done nothing good for the industry. Sega and Sony already had online play planned, they just didn't charge money for it so they had much less resources to work with which is why their services were barebones. You would be paying for online play with zero bonuses if it weren't for Sony. I never said Sony or even Nintendo are some godsend to gaming, but at least they're not using billions of dollars gained from outside of the gaming industry to brute force control of it. Yes what a great company that buys up giant 3rd party publishers just to take games off of other platforms!
You bring up their service as if they're doing it to save you money, news flash they're not. Lol@ "guts" to do this. They're taking huge losses now so they can gain control of the industry. The reality is MS is the only one who can afford to do this since they make so much money from the rest of the company and once they have the control they want they'll be able to dictate the industry. If Xbox becomes the lead platform and people just stick to Gamepass and stop buying as many games then it will destroy 3rd party publishers. The reason why no one else has done this yet is because it's not affordable.
And still, Nintendo fanboys pay 60 Euro for three halfhearted upscaled Mario games.
"Sony Fans Bicker Over Ghost of Tsushima PS5 Paywall" , I haven't seen or heard any bickering anywhere except here.
While I do understand why people are bickering and upset, sadly there is nothing we can do about it...
So either speak with your wallet and don't buy it, or wait for a steep discount in a few years.
Too many people on here cry, bitch and whine. If you don't see it as worth paying for guess what? You don't have to pay for it!
I'm used to paying for additional content and maybe that's wrong I don't know but this entitled approach is just getting annoying. Why stop there? Why not demand Crossbuy across everything you own?
We've clearly been spoiled by Sony and MS in the past for people to be crying like this. Whichever muppet said we bought new consoles to access the upgraded features for old games for free is deluded. You already bought the game as it was so anything extra is just that "extra". If we get it for free amazing. If there's a charge for doing this then you weigh up the odds if its worth it. If not then simply put your wallet back in your pocket.
The only thing I hold all these publishers responsible for is the dry period the media are going through. I hope they give them something to chew on soon because the articles focusing on this type of stuff shows just how much of a media drought there is.
@FX102A well said. I also don't get how everyone is so raging about paying a small sum to either get some DLC for £10 or £30 for the whole lot on ps5 but are quite happy to purchase super deluxe editions of games at £100 just for a few extra skins, a digital art book & sound track 😅 no one's raging about these stupid special edition at crazy prices, that's fine for some reason
23rd October – Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Heist
November – Marvel’s Spider-Man: Turf Wars
December – Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Lining
Should have been in the main game
$10 each
Where was the outrage from this site?
I really don't understand gaming in general anymore. I mean it's always been run by big corporations but these days they don't even need to hide it anymore! Massive company buys loads of 3rd party gaming developers and then say" here you can pay monthly to play the games but hey of you stop paying you can't play! Plus you don't own the games anymore we do!!" I just can't see how this is a good idea. Microsoft could literally do a ea on some of these company's and pull the plug anytime they like. As for push square constantly mentioning game pass, xbox and fueling this constant bickering is shocking. I mean I like a good old constructive conversation as much as the dude but it's getting a boring now! And before anyone starts saying fan boy this fan boy that.... No I'm not a fan boy I also think this is ridiculous that I'm gonna have to pay a extra 10 quid for a upgrade but hey at least it's a one off charge and I own the game after!
Phew rant over
Who, if not Sony a platfolmholder, should offer free upgrades? Who?
I've never seen so much praise for a subscription service which will end up costing £20-£25 per month. With games rammed with microtransactions. And you need a £150 additional controller as the Xbox X included controller is rubbish.
I've been living this Microsoft nightmare due to extortionate prices of Windows and I can see the same crap being applied to games. Long live Sony. Long live physical games and shops.
Man, whatever happened to PushSquare?
@themcnoisy I completely agree! I just don't get what the fuss is about with game pass! You are not owning the game people! It's like paying to borrow a game! And it ain't gonna be cheap for much longer. This is Microsoft!
I don't mind paying for the DLC especially as I really enjoyed the main game. Just hoping I'm not having to follow footprints as much like in the main game as that got old very quickly. As for the extra tenner for ps5 I'm put off but will probably go.with it if the DLC is well received. I know the temptation will get the better of me.
the suits are in to rip us all off. this generation i find myself buying on steam cheaper than these console games , il keep with my ps4 version nothing wrong with it. im playing all my old games on ps5 and xbox series x this oooh get the shiney graphics for extra money will faze out when the games made are for current consoles but theyll do their best to keep the 70 a game.meh il wait til sales.
I see people are finally seeing the light, push square do nothing but fuel discourse and then sit back and popcorn time for them. Been saying it time and time again. Fair enough some publishers offer free upgrades, fair enough Sony did it with miles morales and sackboy, cool, maybe this game should have the same treatment, would definitely be nice. We’ve identified that, so move on, you don’t beat it over and over, making it seem as if this spells the end. It just all seems so forced and a bit much, it’s always a ploy to get more clicks.
@JJ2 it makes no sense! Been engaging less and less but all I want to see is gaming news. Not Xbox/PC/PS Masterrace, just gaming news. Everyday it’s gamepass does this and PS doesn’t do this! Can’t we focus on gamepass is good in some aspects but bad in some. PS Now is good in some, bad in some. Instead it’s Sony bad, Sony very bad, Microsoft good. And notice how something shocking or negative about PlayStation comes up and they’ll find a way to slide it into 30 articles even if it doesn’t really relate.
@mucc Sony any better buying 3rd party exclusivity and timed exclusivity? They've been doing that since PS3 days. They've been buying exclusive additional content for 3rd party games since PS3 days...you think things like Spiderman in avengers is new? Nobody remember the likes of dead space? You've no problem with this but Microsoft buys Bethesda you have a problem with...ok. The first two Bethesda games since joining Xbox are playstation exclusive...this doesn't tell you how things would have been going?
Who told you Xbox is taking huge loses? New hardware is always sold at a loss - ps5 is being sold at a loss. Are you talking about Gamepass? This seems to be a new theory I hear Sony fanboys run with 'gamepass is making a loss - it's not sustainable'...gamepass already have over 18 million subs. Do you have any idea how much monthly revenue that brings in? Phil Spencer has said himself it's making money (watch his latest ign interview). And Microsoft keep investing money in it - where in their history have you seen them invest money in something that isn't making money? You remember windows phone? Zune?
Microsoft know business better that you. Don't concern yourself with losses.
Why would people subbing to gamepass destroy 3rd party publishers? They're still be there - just more will have their games on subscription services too.
To correct you. The reason why nobdy else has done this yet is because they can't afford to.
@theMEGAniggle yep, just another trash article by Sammy. Not surprised really, most of Sammy's articles have been nothing but clickbait for a while now.
Guess it works though, we're all here talking about it
@ReddJelly are we talking about the article or asking for less of this click bait? Look through the comments, it’s depressing. I know the site will look at this as engaging but this is just sad.
I like these authors when they sit and make long detailed articles about a problem or about a game. I hate when they bring a topic that is already beaten to death or is not an issue and make it seem as if it spells the end! So frustrating to read over and over again.
@sham8nix @themcnoisy Seeing as almost every Sony first party games are single player, how long and often are you going to keep playing that same game for over and over, that you’ve paid £60/£70 for if bought day one?
At least with the games that get added to Game Pass, I can finish them all while only paying £10.99 a month. That is £131.88 a year, if you bought two PS5 games for £69.99 that is more than a years worth of Game Pass. This year alone Game Pass had/getting, Dirt 5, The Medium, Outriders, MLB The Show 21, Flight Simulator, The Ascent, Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, the Yakuza series, all of Bethesda games and many others. Knock Game Pass all you like but you can’t doubt it’s value and with all the studio acquisitions many more great games will come.
@theMEGAniggle kinda both really tbh; the clickbait is truly infuriating, but as you say bringing up topics that have already been dragged out for ages is just boring, and more than a little difficult to take seriously
@ReddJelly very infuriating, psls do it better, just a shame they aren’t as big
@notbrianblessed I 100000% agree with you. The entitlement of people nowadays is beyond ridiculous.
Just because Microsoft does it it doesn’t mean Sony has to follow suit. If you’re really bothered by this, switch to Xbox or vote with your wallets, but bickering like 10 year old kids who didn’t get an extra $10 allowance to spend on such an incredible game that comes only once every so many years is pathetic.
@Salt_AU Unless your a shareholder why would you be concerned about the developer? They are obviously getting paid enough by Microsoft to have their games added to Game Pass otherwise they wouldn’t do it.
Microsoft can afford to keeping running Game Pass at a loss, what ever money they lose with Game Pass they will make much more else where in other revenue. Microsoft right now is investing in Game Pass and it’s paying off because it’s just constantly growing.
So much drama over £8.99. There's plenty of really cheap stuff out there if you don't want to pay for the upgrade or any full priced game for that matter. Just wait a while longer.
@Bleachedsmiles agreed, Microsoft can afford to buy market share because they're making $100s of billions from the boom in cloud computing (Azure) and homeworking (Teams, Office 365).
All that said, Sony are raking it in still. Plenty of space in the market for both competitors.
@MaccaMUFC Again though...other than playstation owners showing concern gamepass is running at a loss who is telling people this? 18 million subscribers paying monthly fees...probably more now. It's reasonable to assume that's going to keep growing. Especially when you take in their future plans for it (apps on TVs etc). It's fake concern to try and add some validity to a point that games are going to suffer...when it could so easily go the other way and we'll start seeing more creativity and risks being taken because Devs can now afford to do so as they have the gamepass pot security.
@theMEGAniggle I don't actually know that website, I'll check it out 👍
@Grimwood Ramifications... You guys need to take a step back and look at what's being asked for. And what's being asked of you.
You've already paid for upgrades that take advantage of the ps5 by buying the ps5...that's reasonable correct? A game that's developed on a PC and then scaled to take advantage of closed hardware is worth £10 extra work? Not even Sony believe that. If they did then why isn't £10 added to the PlayStation version and the pro version? - both needing the extra work to adjust resolution (which is dynamic btw) and framerate. And when Sony games hit pc is it reasonable to expect that for extra work was needed for pc settings? Where's the £10 tax for it? Are we honestly being entitled to not pay for graphics settings on the ps5 versions of cross-gen games? When the hardware wasn't free?
Are extra rumble features really worth £10? Are we honestly being entitled not expecting to pay £10 for rumble?
End of the day the only thing that any real work went into this over The PS4 version of the directors cut is Japanese lipsyncing. Is that really worth £10 extra? And if Sony aren't 'nickel and diming' ps5 owners then why, when the works been done and theirs no hardware limitation reasons, is japanese lip sync ps5 exclusive? And not on all consoles? There's no real reason for it other than to add to sense of value to that £10 difference.
They should have either released both versions at 60 or both at 70.
@helloim_anthony just because I can spend it doesn’t mean that I should. Even Bethesda gave a damn next gen upgrade for DOOM Eternal for free (while it continues to charge separately for the DLC). Would it really kill Sony to give it for free while charging for DLC? They look petty trying to nickel and dime their customers.
I don't understand the love for this game, I found it ok but not great,
When I first started playing it I was blown away at everything, but then the repeativeness of it set in and I got bored of it about 1/2 way through and abandoned it, and I even finished days gone. The side missions were mostly very similar and nothing really driving me to continue from a combat or skills tree perspective.
I don't know why we are getting these dumbed down open world action lite RPGs all the time now to cater to audiences with no time or something, I say make these open world games more complex and stop holding everyone's hand.
Anyway i won't be downloading a ps5 version even it was free. 😀
Also we have known that Sony are complete khu*ts to their user base. They are repeat offenders when it comes to wringing every cent out of everyone with slimy tactics like this.
@mrbone well, the thing is MS store adjusts it's prices depending on the region, so that's why I get prices so low. I live in a 3rd (or worse) country so prices are way lower. For instance RE2 is 39.99USD on PSN here, and in MS Store USA is the same 39.99USD, but MS Store local (AR) is just 11USD. And just checked The Terminator, same, 39.99 on US stores but not even 6USD here... Steam does the same thing adjusting prices by region, but Sony doesn't... in fact prices here are even higher than the US store for PSN. So that's it.
@Salt_AU Simply because they can’t afford to. Sony and Nintendo rely on console and software sales, Microsoft don’t.
@KilloWertz well you should be playing games instead of commenting on a article.
@MattSilverado Oops. Not sure about your regional pricing. Heard game consoles are quite expensive in South America due to tax. Not sure why Sony don’t have regional pricing in your country. People took advantage of it and steam has stopped people changing the region last year. Anyway for playstation, what some people tend to do is buying from Turkey, Indonesia and India which are much cheaper. For Xbox, it is Brazil. For Steam, your country used to be very popular.
@ReddJelly PlayStation lifestyle, let me know what you think about it
@ATaco actually it probably will The ps5 version will be 70, the ps4 version will probably be 60. I could see them charging ten dollars for the folks that buy the ps4 version when they want to upgrade to the ps5 version. It's just wrong on so many levels and lots of people are like fine with it. I'm a big Sony fan and even I can see the wrong with it.
I'm a huge fan of Sony but even I think this is wrong and should be called out for it. I loved this game and if you had told me they were bringing extra single player content out, I would have been right there day one or I thought so anyway. But thirty dollars, 20 for the dlc, 10 for the next gen extras. Sorry no. I paid for the ps5 console, so I paid for all those extras. In fact I paid for two ps5s. Plus I was a day 1 buyer of the game so I paid full price unlike people who waited. Those day 1 buyers are going to be the first people who would buy the dlc, why should they get hosed. Sony is trying to be a lot like nintendo here. Now Ill wait for reviews. If the dlc seems like it's worth thirty bucks which means it will need to be about half of what the main game is then I'll buy it but I figure it will just be a few hours. In that case I will wait which is what I believe most should do but a lot won't.
I still haven't played GoTsu, so this isn't specifically a big deal to me, but it's setting my expectations for Death Stranding, and if that matches this, then I'll also be annoyed. Although that game is at least ever so slightly older, and slightly less annoying.
GoTsu is only a year old, they could damn well just arbitrarily tie the Director's Cut to the upgrade, if nothing else. Make it seem like a deal. It's just obnoxious and scummy to charge for the DLC and extra to upgrade a year old game.
Sorta like how the PS+ versions of FFVII or Greedfall were ineligible for PS5 upgrades. What a ***** way to rival Smart Delivery, which wasn't a feature until Sony made it one.
Early adopting is never the best value, but Sony is straight up making it feel like a bad choice. My PS5 has so far mostly been "the best PS4 I've owned", in large part because I own other platforms and can wait for better deals for content I actually want. Also because the three "launch" (window) titles I was excited for are barely coming out almost a year later. (Deathloop, Kena, Horizon FW).
@Bleachedsmiles I love how you bring up timed exclusivity and 3rd party exclusivity as if Sony is the only one doing it. Xbox's Series biggest exclusive game so far is literally a 3rd party timed exclusive, lets not talk about Stalker 2 and the plethora of other "console launch exclusives" though right? Also you're dense if you think playing games 6-12 months later is somehow WORSE than never being able to play something.
Gamepass is still losing money, you have no idea of what you're talking about. Tom Warren has said this as recently as the end of May. MS has never even officially said it makes them money, I wonder why? Do you honestly think offering $3 for 3 months is going to make their service money when they're going to be launching games with budgets over $100 million? They've said numerous times they're playing the long game and are willing to lose for the future. A future where most people just pay a set fee a month will absolutely impact how games are made. You think it's bad now with seasons, microtransactions, and live service games? Just wait for the future.
And there in line is the problem with 3rd party publishers. You want everything to go through MS and Gamepass which they'll make pennies compared to before. If you don't think that impacts games as a whole you don't understand the business.
I'm thinking just to pay for the DLC on PS4 which is fair and not upgrading it to PS5. (Actually is the only option available currently on the PS Store - upgrade to DC on PS4 version) At the end of the day I will be playing the game at 60fps, I'll just be just sorry to miss the dual sense features. But whatever, I won't be supporting this greedy action of Sony charging for the upgrade.
It's all about us - gamers, to make Sony do a U turn - not paying for the upgrade and much less paying full game price on PS4/PS5 after 1y release!
Same applies for example to not pre-order games before knowing the its state, etc. As long as we keep giving our money to these companies, they simply not give a f*** and they will keep continuing stretching the rope until they can.
Also, regarding the increment of the of the game's price due the the cost of production also have raised, it's a damn joke, this is music to our ears. We as a consumer don't care and we should demand the best at the lowest price possible. At the end of the day these companies are millionaire / billionaire.. they really need to increase the price 10€? Of course not, they are just looking ways to maximize their profit and get even more rich. Please don't believe in this story, look for example how much money these AAA companies like Ubisoft make and many of them the money they get only from microtransactions like EA with FIFA, NBA etc..
It's a shame how this gaming industry turned out to be... It's all about money nothing else matters, but this unfortunately applies to everything in this world!!..
@theMEGAniggle
Totally with you
I have absolutely nothing against GamePass but it's completely irrelevant to me and I don't need to see all the free advertisement. I do hate advertisement haha
I got the feeling the press is ramping up for next DS directors cut, Horizon2 and GOW etc get their click fest firework fake outrage ready to go haha.
GoT and SP are such a weird thing for the press to build a gallow for and harangue the lynch mob. I'm sure there is much more anti consumer stuff to go rage about.
I mean, OK they can question stuff in a paragraph it's fair, but it's getting like a full blown campaign.
No way I'm paying for this on PS5.
Ridiculous cash grab paywall aside, It's not even a standalone expansion. For those paying for this game first time they are paying $60-70 dollars tops for this content.
For those of us that bought and supported this game at full price on original release, our total investment into the game in order to play this rerelease will now be $80-90.
Greed.
@mucc I never said Xbox doesn't get 3rd party timed exclusives. But you're going on about Microsoft being anti consumer for buying Bethesda when it's VERY clear if they hadn't there'd be a lot more bathesda games being timed exclusive on Sony platform. And let's not kid ourselves that xboxs amount of timed exclusives are anyway close to approaching Sony's. And rarely are the timed exclusivity for as long. You want to cry anti consumerism then keep the same energy for both.
And then accept that Xbox is going to have games playstation isn't. And vice versa.
Well I've no idea what Tom Warren said as recently as may. Or who Tom Warren is. He work for Microsoft? I do however know that Phil Spencer said as recently as 5 days ago that gamepass is making money. I've already suggested you check out his ign interview. I can't be bothered going to the effort of finding you links. And I've really no interest in getting dragged into an argument over a multi billion dollar company's finances like I have shares. So I suggest you just Google the words 'phil spensor gamepass making money'. Hope it eases your mind a little.
I'm no internet business guru like yourself. But I'd look towards existing successful subscription services. If Netflix, prime ect have had a negative impact on movies and shows since their existence. If they've stifled creativity or opened doors to new audiences. If they've denied us content that would have been made...or simply offered us more options in how we get them.
The popularity of subscription services will definitely have an impact on game and how they're made. But it doesn't have to be a negative impact. You've already listed how games are right now.
As much as I grew up with Playstation, reasons like this are why I prefer Xbox these days. This kinda stuff happens much less.
Side note, not every game studio in Washington is in Seattle lol this particular company is in downtown Bellevue.
Does the PS4 DLC run at 4k 60fps on PS5 like the main game does?
@themcnoisy “ a subscription service which will end up costing £20-£25 per month. With games rammed with microtransactions. And you need a £150 additional controller as the Xbox X included controller is rubbish.”
That first comment is complete speculation. If the price goes that high, if people don’t think it’s worth the money, they’ll just buy the games outright. And as far as the controller, I’ve never had an issue with an Xbox controller that wasn’t normal wear and tear of years of using it. I’ve had very similar reliability experiences with my Xbox 1 and PS4 controllers. My Series X and PS5 controllers are both still going strong.
@JJ2 the repeat articles just stink, just like returnal constantly getting articles questioning if it should be full price, support the games, don’t ***** on them!
It is really weird that people are picking on it isn’t it? I suppose it’s one of those dry months after Sony didn’t show anything during everyone else’s showcases.
Both versions should be the same price! Gamepass is very good! Ps now had a rocky first 6ish years but is now getting there! Xbox are doing well! Ps5 is killing it! See that push square, we can make opinions without dragging things on and on.
It’s ok to like a particular game/developer while at the same time disliking the decisions of execs. surrounding PS4/PS5 upgrades and/or additional paid content. It’s a complex discussion
@Salt_AU It isn’t sustainable for Sony and Nintendo but it clearly is for Microsoft as they are invested in Game Pass for the long haul, it’s been over 4 years since Game Pass was created if it really wasn’t sustainable then how is it still going strong? I wouldn’t worry about it thought as I’m sure a company like Microsoft know exactly what they are doing.
As for them offering $1 Game Pass deals, they have been doing that for years and it must be legit as no law has been opposed to it. The Bethesda buyout? It was investigated and then was allowed to go ahead, so therefor also legit.
@theMEGAniggle
Just one example.
Do you know when you buy a series X disc ....the series X game isn't on the disc?
They use old discs with the xb1 game to be updated online. And they raged about CMOS time bomb..
Imagine the rage (+lawsuits) if it was PlayStation nowadays. There is one thread already raging the IKI island DLC isn't on the disc.
@JJ2 that’s incredibly devious if that’s true. I’m not saying I don’t believe you either but wow. So really and truly there’s no disc based content and they’ve fully realised their DRM dream? Wow. It’s just weird at this point because the media narrative doesn’t include these things. I know that’s how PS5 games work if it’s a free upgrade from PS4 but for every XSX game to be like that?? Wow.
@The_New_Butler I don't actually mind Microsoft per say. I use Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint and gamed on the Xbox and 360. My big issue is their subscription model. Office is a rip off and that's exactly the line gamepass will eventually follow. Office is great, but not worth £100+ for every pc user in my office. I've considered going all in with Linux but we have massive compatibility issues as everyone else uses office.
For instance you now have pay mechanics in solitaire which has always been free. It's just dirty and unnecessary. The sub method makes sense to a company but it will also cut off a significant amount of jobs in the retail space - which I still enjoy going to. And it's not as if gaming has been Uber expensive to start with. Buy a game you want - finish it - trade it in for 5/8 of the price rinse and repeat. My gaming hobby probably costs £400 a year or so all in and I play all the games I want to play, gamepass will be great for a couple of months and then will become similar to ps now which I haven't touched for months.
@The_New_Butler Both MS office and Xbox gamepass are Microsoft thing as. It's not the end of the world if gamepass becomes the defacto way we consume games, Its that I didn't have an issue with gold/ps plus (approx £5 a month) and buying the games I want retail and trading them when done. Occasionally dipping into digital sales. If we end up paying £20-£25 a month, well yes I will buy less games for sure and the ones I own won't necessarily be what I want to play.
Here is an examples. I bought judgement for £25 and once I'm done will trade it for maybe £15. It cost me a tenner for a game over the next 2-3 months as I play these games slowly. To do it over Xbox will cost what £30 now and maybe £75 in the future? That's a worse deal. Also my local gameshops will close down.
Digital is the future but as a gamer who spends a fraction on my hobby than I've ever spent on music production, cars, houses and kids I don't want everything on tick. It's nice to own things and games are cheap.
@theMEGAniggle
Next gen only games which are rare, are on disc.
Cross gen discs, even labeled as series X discs, have the xb1 game because of smart delivery.
@The_New_Butler it's not just MS I'm having a go at here. Although they are pushing it way more than Sony. It's the way gaming is going in general. It will be an all digital future similar to the music industry. I would prefer it never went that route. Gaming is cheap anyway. The only thing going all digital is doing is giving us more homogenised games and no outlets to purchase games from or to trade them in with. So inevitably we will all be on subs especially big gamers like you and me compared to a Cod / FIFA player.
I honestly don't mind paying money for a good service but I have been getting that for 35 years since I could game. Playing thousands of games. I've never been bankrupted because of gaming. That could change if you have 5-6 subs on monthly Direct debit.
Ubisoft, Square, Take 2 and all the third parties will end up with services and that will just mean more and more exclusivity. Or rather more and differing subs with even more microtransactions.
It's all speculation of course but I was bemoaning Mass Effect 3s micros and could forsee where we are now. It will happen and all the gaming outlets like Game will close. Then you will have to sub and the subs price will go up.
@JJ2 win win for Xbox players then
@theMEGAniggle

I’m most certainly going to pay the price for an upgrade and dlc. I love the game, and the dev team has done an awesome job so far. I don’t see the issue really, $10 bucks is a small amount and just because people say the words “free upgrade” doesn’t mean all developers need to offer extra work for free.
@JJ2 oh so I was right then in my earlier comment. I thought you were correcting me. Yeah seems like Microsoft finally got their DRM dream 😅
In any case this is extremely anti consumer. How can buying a disc only act as a glorified license when other systems just allow you to do whatever you want. Signing in to play physical games? Oh no Microsoft :/
@theMEGAniggle PSLS seems pretty decent bud, a lot more focus on news rather than just 'stirring the pot' 👍
@Ridgerunner completely agree, the entitlement of some people is staggering.
Just coz some Devs have offered free upgrades doesn't mean it should be automatically expected; a crazy amount of people seem to think it didn't cost anything to make the upgrade(s) in the first place
@ReddJelly it’s very good but unfortunately has a very small but engaging community. That site deserves the traffic this one gets but I guess that’s what click bait gets you
Just watched an unboxing video, seems the DLC is on the PS5 Directors cut disc 👍🏻👍🏻
